According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, former President Donald Trump's legal woes could present significant challenges to his potential candidacy in the 2024 election.
The survey revealed that 45% of Republican respondents stated they would not support Trump if he were convicted of a felony. Additionally, 52% of these respondents indicated they would not back him if he were currently serving time in prison.
On Thursday, Trump faced his third arraignment, this time in a Washington D.C. court, after being indicted on four charges related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. He has pleaded not guilty to these charges, which include accusations of organizing a far-reaching conspiracy to steal the election and fueling the historic Capitol insurrection.
Aside from this indictment, Trump also faces two other legal cases—one in New York concerning hush money payments to an adult film star and another federal case in Florida involving obstruction of justice and improper retention of classified documents.
Interestingly, the poll revealed that Republicans are less likely to believe the specific charges in the third indictment, particularly those related to election fraud solicitation and incitement of the January 6, 2021, Capitol mob attack. Nearly half of all Americans surveyed believe the charges are politically motivated, with 56% of Republicans strongly agreeing with this sentiment.
Despite these legal challenges, Trump continues to maintain a lead in the crowded GOP field, with 47% of Republicans polled expressing support for him as the potential Republican presidential nominee.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted between August 2 and August 3, and it included 1,005 adults from various political affiliations, such as Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. The margin of error for Democrats was plus or minus 5.7 percentage points, plus or minus 6.4 percentage points for Republicans, and plus or minus 11.1 percentage points for Independents.
