Republicans in the US House of Representatives are rallying around a proposal to raise the country's borrowing limit and reduce federal spending after some last-minute
changes were made to win over key GOP holdouts.
The changes include allowing proposed work requirements for Medicaid beneficiaries to be implemented more quickly and the removal of a repeal of certain tax breaks for biofuels.
The GOP leaders hope to pass the bill on Wednesday to boost Speaker Kevin McCarthy's negotiating stance with Democrats. If successful, it will be a symbolic win for GOP leadership, although the legislation is dead on arrival in the Democrat-led Senate. The country is approaching its default deadline as soon as this summer. Photo by Farragutful, Wikimedia commons.
