The daughter of an environmentalist who is currently imprisoned in Iran has expressed her lack of confidence in President Joe Biden's efforts to free her father. Morad
Tahbaz, who is both Iranian-American and British, was convicted of spying and has served five years of a 10-year sentence.
Despite being released to house arrest in March 2022, he was subsequently returned to prison. Tara Tahbaz, his daughter, stated that her family and the relatives of two other U.S. prisoners in Iran hoped to have an opportunity to explain their stories at a meeting in Washington scheduled for next month.
Morad Tahbaz, who is now 67, is suffering from prostate cancer and has contracted COVID-19 three times while in jail. The United States has called for the release of Tahbaz and two other citizens, Emad Shargi and Siamak Namazi, who are also imprisoned on espionage charges. Namazi, an oil executive, was sentenced to 10 years in 2016 for allegedly spying and cooperating with the U.S. government, while Shargi was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 10 years as well.
The U.S. State Department has called on Iran to release these individuals, emphasizing that the espionage charges are baseless and that foreign nationals should not be used as political leverage. Photo by Apcbg, Wikimedia commons.
