A recent court filing lodged on Wednesday accused New York Mayor Eric Adams of sexual assault and other transgressions, allegedly occurring in 1993 while both the accuser and Adams
worked for the city of New York.
A spokesperson for Adams promptly refuted the claim, asserting that the mayor neither knows the accuser nor recollects any encounter with her.
This accusation is among several complaints submitted this week against public figures under New York state's Adult Survivors Act. The legal provision allows such lawsuits, even when the statutes of limitations have expired, and precedes the closure of a special one-year window for filing such claims.
The court summons filed against Adams, a former police officer, lacks specific details about the incident but outlines the nature of the action as "sexual assault, battery, employment discrimination based on gender and sex, retaliation, a hostile work environment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress." Seeking a minimum of $5 million in damages, the summons also names the city of New York, the New York Police Department's transit bureau, the department's Guardians Association, a fraternal organization representing Black officers, and three undisclosed entities as defendants.
Neither the police department nor the Guardians Association has responded to requests for comment as of Thursday.
A City Hall spokesperson, addressing the accusation, stated that the mayor does not recognize the accuser and vehemently denies the allegations, expressing adamantly that Adams would never engage in physical harm against another individual.
This allegation emerges amidst additional legal complications for Adams. The FBI conducted a search of Adams' electronic devices on November 6, reportedly investigating potential illegal contributions to his 2021 campaign, including purported donations from the Turkish government. While Adams' lawyer affirmed the mayor's cooperation with the investigation, no further details about the probe were disclosed. Photo by UK Government, Wikimedia commons.
