Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made cuts to his campaign staff as his campaign rapidly depletes its funds. After spending almost $8 million of the $20 million raised in the second quarter,
DeSantis reported having $12.2 million in cash on hand at the end of June, with only $3 million available for the primary election. The campaign has terminated fewer than 10 staffers involved in event planning, with more terminations expected due to concerns about overspending.
DeSantis, who trails behind former President Donald Trump by 32 percentage points in national GOP presidential primary polls, announced a $20 million fundraising total for the second quarter. However, his fundraising report reveals heavy reliance on larger donors, with $2.9 million coming from contributors who have given less than $200, and the majority of funds coming from donors who gave $200 or more. This differs from Trump's campaign, which received substantial support from a multitude of small donors, signaling grassroots enthusiasm.
DeSantis' fundraising report shows that he has drawn the most donations from his home state of Florida, followed by contributions from California, Texas, and New York. The campaign's expenditures include media placements, direct mail postage, SMS text messaging, donor mementos, campaign apparel, and payments to the Four Seasons Miami, where fundraising events were held.
Trump, in a recent speech, taunted DeSantis and called on him to withdraw from the race, suggesting that DeSantis should use his campaign funds to support Trump and the Republican Party in the upcoming election. Meanwhile, a super PAC supporting DeSantis called "Never Back Down" has collected $130 million, although specific fundraising details are yet to be disclosed.
