Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has stated that Mexico is collaborating with the United States to prevent "chaos" and "violence" on their shared border
as Title 42, a US COVID-19 restriction that blocked hundreds of thousands of migrants from seeking asylum, comes to an end. The restrictions will be replaced with stringent new regulations, and US President Joe Biden has warned that the shared border may be "chaotic" for some time as the regulations change. To safeguard migrants from unscrupulous people smugglers taking advantage of the perception that the border is now "open," authorities in southern Mexico are working to "protect" migrants.
The Mexican National Guard has been dispatched to the country's southern border, with orders not to use force against migrants. Lopez Obrador has also urged Biden to adopt "good neighbor" policies and collaborate with countries such as Cuba and Venezuela to address the root causes of migration, as he has long advocated for increased US investment in the region.
