The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll released on Sunday presents unfavorable results for President Joe Biden and potentially favorable ones for his possible 2024
opponent, Donald Trump. The poll reveals that in a hypothetical 2024 general election matchup, the president trails Trump by 7 points. Respondents were asked whether they would “definitely” vote for Trump or Biden, “probably” vote for either candidate, or not vote at all. Trump leads Biden 36-32 among those who “definitely” prefer one candidate over the other. However, when including those who “probably” vote for a candidate, Trump’s lead increases to 45-38 over Biden.
If Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) were the Republican nominee, the poll shows that Biden would fare only slightly better. The president is tied with DeSantis 32-32 among those who “definitely” back a particular candidate. But when including the “probably” category, DeSantis pulls ahead 42-37.
In addition, the ABC/Washington Post poll shows that President Biden's approval ratings are low. Only 36% of voters approve of the job he is doing, while 56% do not. This is down 6 points from the last poll in February and represents an all-time low for him in this particular survey.
One significant concern for Biden is his performance on the economy, where Trump holds a commanding lead. A majority of voters, 54%, think that Trump did a better job handling the economy than Biden has so far. Only 36% chose Biden in this category.
