Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's recent comments on the Ukraine conflict have drawn criticism from the United States. During a visit to China, Lula urged
the US to begin discussing peace in Ukraine and expressed his desire to broker peace talks between the conflicting parties. When Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited Brazil, Lula thanked Brazil for its efforts to end the conflict.
However, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby accused Lula of "parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda" and called his comments "simply misguided." Despite not imposing sanctions on Russia, Brazil is calling for peace talks, while Ukraine and its allies argue for an immediate ceasefire.
Last year, Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine led to the International Criminal Court issuing an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite the criticism, Lavrov expressed gratitude for Brazil's understanding of the situation and desire to help find ways to resolve it.
