A fundraising group supporting Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, and his potential run for the US presidency, launched its first attack ad against leading rival

Donald Trump. The advertisement, titled “Fight Democrats, not Republicans,” questions the former president’s loyalty to his fellow Republicans. It starts with a reference to Mr Trump’s legal troubles in New York and asks why he is spending millions attacking the Republican governor of Florida.

Polls show that Mr Trump is leading the field of declared and undeclared candidates in the 2024 Republican nomination race, with Mr DeSantis in second place. The ad, released by Never Back Down, the Super PAC backing Mr DeSantis, appears online and on Fox News Sunday.

Meanwhile, Make America Great Again, the major Super PAC aligned with Mr Trump, has already attacked Mr DeSantis in ads. Its latest release referenced a Daily Beast report from 2019 that Mr DeSantis ate chocolate pudding with his fingers on a flight from Tallahassee to Washington. The ad accuses Mr DeSantis of cutting Medicare, slashing Social Security, and even raising the retirement age. It urges Mr DeSantis to keep his “pudding fingers” off people's money.
