Colombia experienced a significant earthquake followed by a substantial aftershock on Thursday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The initial quake recorded a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, as reported by the USGS. It occurred just after 2 p.m. local time and was located approximately 10 miles north of Cumaral.

Cumaral is situated about 50 miles southeast of Bogota, the capital city of Colombia.

Although injuries have not been confirmed immediately, reports from The Associated Press indicated that people in both the capital city and Medellin, which is approximately 152 miles northwest, felt the shaking and observed buildings moving.

An aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 was recorded, originating about 4 miles southwest of Restrepo, as stated by the USGS.

Restrepo, situated in east-central Colombia, is approximately 50 miles from Bogota.

The earthquake had a depth of 10 miles, as indicated by data from the USGS.
