As devastating wildfires continue to wreak havoc on Maui, Hawaii, Jewish groups both in the United States and on the island itself are stepping up their relief efforts to aid those affected by the

tragedy. The fires have claimed more than 50 lives and inflicted widespread destruction, including the near-total devastation of the town of Lahaina.

Hawaii's Jewish governor, Josh Green, accompanied by the state's Jewish senator, Brian Schatz, surveyed the aftermath in Lahaina, describing it as "likely the largest natural disaster in Hawaii state history." Jewish groups are now working together to provide support to those impacted by the fires.

The Jewish Congregation of Maui expressed gratitude that their synagogue and grounds remained safe, but acknowledged the losses suffered by their community members. The fires have affected not only homes and businesses but have also claimed lives, leaving many in need of assistance.

The changing climate and environmental factors have contributed to the increased vulnerability of Hawaii to wildfires, a situation exacerbated by climate change. Hawaii's Jewish community, consisting of approximately 2,000 to 3,000 individuals, is now rallying together to offer help and support.

The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) has initiated the Hawaii Wildfire Fund to provide essential supplies like toiletries, first-aid kits, non-perishable foods, and baby supplies to evacuees. The JFNA recognizes that assistance is needed not only in Maui but also in Honolulu, where evacuees are seeking refuge.

Congregation Neveh Shalom's Rabbi David Kosak, vacationing in Maui, has joined forces with Portland's Jewish community to extend aid to evacuees. This partnership aims to accelerate assistance efforts and provide humanitarian support to those affected by the wildfires.

Senator Brian Schatz, in his social media updates from Lahaina, expressed the heartbreak over the devastation and the long road to recovery ahead. Amid the ashes of Lahaina, the spirit of solidarity and support within the Jewish community shines brightly, showcasing the power of collective action during times of crisis.
