The Carter family announced on Tuesday that Rosalynn Carter, former US first lady and wife of former president Jimmy Carter, has been diagnosed with dementia.
In a statement released by the Carter Center, the family shared that Rosalynn Carter, 95, continues to reside happily at home with her husband in Plains, Georgia, enjoying the arrival of spring and cherished moments with loved ones.
The family highlighted Rosalynn Carter's decades-long advocacy to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. They expressed their hope that sharing her diagnosis would spark meaningful conversations in households and medical settings across the nation.
The Carters served as occupants of the White House during a Democratic administration from 1977 to 1981. They have been married since 1946 and have four children.
Earlier in February, the Carter Center revealed that Jimmy Carter, now 98 years old, has been receiving hospice care at home, choosing comfort care over medical interventions.
