Saudi Arabia is set to host a peace summit organized by Ukraine in early August with the aim of finding a pathway to initiate negotiations to address Russia's war on Ukraine. The summit, to be

held in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, will include participation from Brazil, India, South Africa, and several other countries.

A high-level official from U.S. President Joe Biden's administration is also expected to attend. The talks are planned to take place on August 5 and 6, with around 30 countries participating. Russia has not been invited to the event.

The summit follows previous talks held in Copenhagen in June. Both Saudi Arabia and Ukraine have yet to officially acknowledge the planned talks.

The hosting of the summit could also serve to elevate the profile of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has been pursuing efforts for peace in Yemen and seeking a détente with Iran. However, strained ties with the West over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul remain an issue. Photo by Tamoy Garra, Wikimedia commons.
