Former US President Donald Trump has initiated legal action against a former British spy connected to a dossier that alleged Trump's "compromised" relationship with Russia's security services.
According to High Court records, Donald Trump is pursuing a data protection lawsuit against Orbis Business Intelligence and its founder, Christopher Steele, who formerly oversaw MI6's Russia desk.
The lawsuit was lodged in November of the previous year, with the first court hearing scheduled for October 16. Donald Trump is not expected to appear in person, and additional case details remain undisclosed.
The Steele Dossier garnered global attention when leaked to BuzzFeed in January 2017, containing claims that Trump had been compromised by Russia's FSB security service. It also asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had "supported and directed" a campaign to cultivate Trump as a presidential candidate for "at least five years."
Christopher Steele, once branded a "low-life" by Donald Trump, was hired by the Washington-based research firm Fusion GPS in June 2016 to investigate Trump's ties to Russia. Fusion GPS was engaged by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's campaign following Trump's emergence as the Republican nominee.
Donald Trump vehemently denied these allegations.
Previously, Christopher Steele and Orbis Business Intelligence faced a libel lawsuit from Russian national Aleksej Gubarev regarding the dossier's publication, with Gubarev asserting their legal responsibility for BuzzFeed's dissemination of the documents. However, in an October 2020 ruling, Mr. Justice Warby dismissed the claim. Photo by Gage Skidmore from Peoria, AZ, United States of America, Wikimedia commons.
