Watch the first official trailer for ‘Captain Marvel,’ coming next March

Months of anticipation for Marvel fans have led to this moment, as the first trailer for Captain Marvel was shared on Good Morning America Tuesday morning. We got our first look at Brie Larson's Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel) earlier this month, but now we finally get the chance to see the new hero in action. While virtually every Marvel movie receives an extraordinary amount of hype before releasing, Captain Marvel has the important (and incredibly difficult) task of setting up Avengers 4, as it will be the last Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to hit theaters before the sequel to Infinity War arrives. It's unclear how much it will connect directly to Infinity War though, as it's set in the 1990s, well before the events of the original Iron Man. To drive that point home, the trailer opens with Danvers crashing through the roof of an operational Blockbuster store. We then hear a voiceover from none other than Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, who will have a very prominent role in Captain Marvel (and hasn't lost one of his eyes yet). We also get a glimpse of Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson, who hasn't appeared in a Marvel movie since The Avengers, but has appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Spoilers for Infinity War follow, but the question on everyone's mind after the events of the latest Avengers movie is how Captain Marvel will play into Avengers 4. After all, the post-credits scene from Infinity War showed Fury paging Captain Marvel just as he was turned into dust by Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet-fueled snap. Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.

How to watch the 2018 Emmy Awards tonight

The most important night of the year for television has arrived. On Monday night, Saturday Night Live cast members Michael Che and Colin Jost will take the stage will take the stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. The show is slated to begin at 5:00 PM PT / 8:00 PM ET on NBC, but you can tune in to E! at 4:30 PM ET for a red carpet countdown and 6:00 PM ET for the live red carpet special. If you want to see a complete list of nominees, we've got you covered. If you want to watch the awards ceremony on Monday night and you have cable, just tune into NBC at 8:00 PM ET. On the other hand, if you aren't around a TV with cable tonight, you can stream the show live on once you log in with your cable provider. You can also watch on the NBC app, which is available on iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox One, as well as Samsung and Vizio smart TVs. If you don’t have a cable subscription, you can either buy an over-the-air antenna, or you can sign up for a free trial of a variety of streaming TV services, including DirecTV NowSling TVHulu Live TVPlayStation Vue, or YouTube TV -- just make sure they carry NBC in your area before you sign up for anything. If you happen to miss the show tonight, check back in tomorrow morning as we'll have a list of all the winners here on And let's hope that Killing Eve comes home with at least one trophy, because it really should.

Apple issues response to user who saw some of his digital movie purchases vanish

As exciting as the past several days have been for Apple fans, with the unveiling of the iPhone XS and Apple Watch Series 4, one slighted consumer is unsatisfied with the way the company handled his issue. On Monday, September 10th, Twitter user Anders G da Silva shared an email he received from Apple after he complained that three movies he had purchased (not rented) suddenly disappeared from his iTunes library. Apple explained to da Silva that the content provider of the movies he bought has since removed the movies from the Canadian iTunes Store, which means that there's no way that Apple can restore his purchases. Apple offered him two movie rental credits (up to $5.99 a piece) instead of a full refund or restoration of the movies. The user's tweet initial tweet with a screenshot of the email from Apple went viral just as the company was getting ready to kick off its latest iPhone reveal event last week, generating over 11,000 retweets and 19,000 likes. As such, Apple felt it necessary to respond, issuing the following statement on Monday:
Any movies you’ve already downloaded can be enjoyed at any time and will not be deleted unless you’ve chosen to do so. If you change your country setting, some movies may not be available to re-download from the movie store if the version you purchased isn’t also available in the new country. If needed, you can change your country setting back to your prior country to re-download those movies.
It's worth pointing out that Apple has every right to allow content providers to remove content at their discretion. If you don't want to risk having your digital purchases taken away from you, buy physical media instead. That said, as Apple states, you can download movies, TV shows, and other digital content on to your hard drive, which means that even if it leaves the iTunes Store, you'll still have access to your own personal copy. Of course, this just might not be a viable solution to someone who has collected a library of hundreds or thousands of movies over the past several years, as Slashfilm notes. If anything, this will hopefully serve as a valuable wake-up call to anyone who thinks their digital purchases will last forever, no matter the source.

OnePlus is coming for cordcutters next with a 4K smart TV

Founded less than five years ago, OnePlus has already made an indelible mark on the smartphone market. Despite operating independently of US carriers, the Chinese company has captured an international audience. And now, with eight phone launches under its belt, OnePlus is finally ready to discuss another flagship product. On Friday, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau announced that OnePlus TV will be the company's next major project. "We want to bring the home environment to the next level of intelligent connectivity," Lau said late last week in a long post on the OnePlus forums. "To do this, we are building a new product of OnePlus’ premium flagship design, image quality and audio experience to more seamlessly connect the home." It appears that OnePlus is still in the early stages of designing its TV, as no specifications or details or release plans were announced in the post. Rather, Lau seems more interesting in giving the growing community of OnePlus fans plenty of time to share their opinions about what they want to see from a OnePlus TV. Lau tweeted as much on Sunday evening, asking his followers to share ideas for names and potential features: Up to this point, OnePlus has only released smartphones and smartphone accessories, but Pete Lau believes that in the process, "our team and community have learned a tremendous amount about software, hardware, design, product development, and delivering on the best possible user experience." Combine this with an active community that has a say in everything OnePlus produces, and Lau feels confident that the TV will be a success.

Nintendo Switch Online FAQ: What you need to know about the Switch online service

With just a few days to spare before the service launches, Nintendo has told us basically everything there is to know about Nintendo Switch Online. As such, we figured this would be the right time to put together a comprehensive FAQ, addressing everything from the release date to the cost to the features to the caveats. If anything new is uncovered or anything changes about the service, we'll be sure to update the article.

When does it launch?

Nintendo Switch Online will be available starting on September 18th, 2018.

Do I really even need it?

If you want to play games online, yes, you need a subscription. If you're reading this prior to September 18th, you still have some time to play games online free of charge, but as soon as the service launches, the only way to access the online features of a vast majority of Switch games will be to pay for Nintendo Switch Online.

How much does it cost?

There are a variety of payment schemes for Nintendo Switch Online: $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months, or $19.99 for a year. There's also a family plan that costs $34.99, but can support up to 8 Nintendo Accounts. If you want to try it out before you commit to paying, there's a 7-day free trial as well.

What do I get in my subscription?

Other than the ability to play games online, you will also gain access to an ever-growing library of classic NES games with added features like online play, cloud saves that automatically back up all your save data, the option to chat with your friends through a smartphone app, and special offers from Nintendo.

What NES games are included?

Here are all of the NES games that have been announced so far, along with their expected release dates:

  • September: Soccer, Tennis, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, Dr. Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3, Double Dragon, River City Ransom, Ghosts'n Goblins, Tecmo Bowl, Gradius, Pro Wrestling, Excitebike, Yoshi, Ice Hockey, Baseball
  • October: Solomon's Key, NES Open Tournament Golf, Super Dodge Ball
  • November: Metroid, Mighty Bomb Jack, TwinBee
  • December: Wario's Woods, Ninja Gaiden, Adventures of Lolo

There's a very peculiar rule that's worth noting regarding the NES games. While you can download the games and play them offline like most other games, you have to go online at least once a week or the games will deactivate until you can reach a connection. Something to keep in mind if you subscribe to the service.

What's up with the smartphone app?

The Nintendo Switch Online app has been available to download on the App Store and Google Play for quite some time now, but it will become much more relevant once the service launches. In addition to voice chat support, the app will also offer a second screen experience to view your in-game stats while you're playing.

What are these special offers?

Nintendo has only revealed two exclusive deals for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to this point. The first are the wireless NES controllers that were unveiled during the latest Nintendo Direct. They look just like the ones that shipped with the NES, and can actually be attached to the Switch just like Joy-Cons to charge. A set of two controllers will cost $59.99 and shipments begin mid-December 2018. Anyone who pays for a 12-month or family plan will also get some exclusive in-game gear for Splatoon 2 (Online Jersey and Online Squidkid V Shoes).

Anything else I should know?

Unlike Sony and Microsoft on the PS4 and Xbox One, Nintendo says that it can't "guarantee" your cloud save data will be stored for an "extended period of time" once your Nintendo Switch Online subscription lapses. In other words, if you decide to stop paying for the service, there's a chance your cloud saves will eventually disappear, even if you resubscribe at a later date. It sounds like this could change, but it will be the policy at launch.

Repairing an iPhone XS Max will cost $150 more than buying a new iPhone 7

Starting at $1,099, the iPhone XS Max is the most expensive smartphone Apple has ever sold. Therefore, its repair costs are greater than any iPhone as well, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise: Apple devices are expensive, and repairing them is expensive as well. But when you put the numbers into perspective, they start to look especially ridiculous, as we discovered when we checked out Apple's updated service repair pricing page. Before we continue, it's worth noting that AppleCare+ can significant reduce the cost of certain repairs, and is a smart purchase if you're prone to dropping expensive devices. But if you don't have AppleCare+ and your one year limited warranty has expired, Apple will charge you $599 to repair "other damage" on an iPhone XS Max. Here's the part where we put that into perspective. As of this week, Apple has lowered the price of 2017's iPhone 8 to $599. In other words, if your phone breaks out of warranty, it would cost you the exact same amount, right down to the dollar, to buy a brand new iPhone 8. It gets even more ridiculous when you consider that the iPhone 7 (which is still a great phone two years later) now costs just $449. That's $150 less than an iPhone XS Max repair. Every iPhone comes with a warranty and AppleCare+ costs $9.99 a month for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, so there's a good chance you won't be confronted with a $600 bill. That said, the fact that it's even possible is somewhat hard to believe. Even a screen repair out of warranty costs $329 for the XS Max.

Samsung will reveal a new device at its ‘4x fun’ event on October 11th

Just two months out from the launch of the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung is already teasing another device unveiling. This week, the company announced a '4x fun' event on its website which it specifically refers to as 'A Galaxy Event,' which suggests that either a new phone or a new tablet will make its debut. Streaming live on Samsung's website on Thursday, October 11th, the event will focus on Samsung's newest Galaxy device, which it claims will bring "more ways to express yourself than ever before." It's unclear how it will accomplish this, but there have been rumors floating around the internet recently that Samsung will introduce a device with four cameras -- all on the back of the device. That would explain the name of the event. There are a wide variety of exciting options for the subject of this event, but considering how soon it's coming after the release of the Galaxy Note 9 and the fact that it seems to be online only, it's hard to imagine Samsung having another flagship product up its sleeve. There's always a chance that this will be the moment that Samsung officially uncovers its foldable phone, but recent reports seem to point to a 2019 launch for the rumored Galaxy F. Flagship or not, we'll know more about the mysterious device when the live streamed event begins on October 11th. The invite did not include a specific time aside from the 11th, but we'll be sure to provide all the latest updates as soon as Samsung shares more details about the timing and content of the '4x fun' event.

9 of the biggest announcements from last night’s massive Nintendo Direct

Nintendo ended up having to delay its latest Direct live stream due to an earthquake in Japan, but it ended up being well worth the wait. On Thursday, the company unleashed a torrent of announcements, including new games for the Switch and 3DS, new information about Nintendo Switch Online, and plenty of ports as well. You can go back and watch the entire 40-minute event on YouTube if you want to get totally caught up, but we have collected all of the most important announcements from the Nintendo Direct below.

Luigi's Mansion 3 One of the strangest and most creative first-party titles for the GameCube is finally getting a full-fledged sequel as Luigi's Mansion 3 has been announced for Switch. It will follow Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, which hit the 3DS in 2013 -- a full 12 years after the original Luigi's Mansion released alongside the GameCube in 2001. And speaking of the original game, it's being remade for the 3DS and launching on October 12th.

Katamari Damacy REROLL

The original Katamari Damacy has been remastered for Switch. If you've never played Katamari Damacy before, the entire point of the game is to roll junk up into a ball which you then shoot into space to become a star. The Nintendo Switch version features gyro controls, HD rumble, multiplayer battles, and arrives this winter.

Nintendo Switch Online

We know from a tweet yesterday that the Nintendo Switch Online service is launching on September 18th. Here are the five most important features included in your membership (which costs $19.99 a year):
  1. Online Play: Starting September 18th, you'll need an NSO subscription to play games online.
  2. NES Games: Play dozens of classic NES games on Switch, some with added multiplayer support.
  3. Save Data Cloud: Game save data is automatically backed up in the cloud with an NSO subscription.
  4. Smartphone App: Use the app to voice chat with friends, connect with certain games for more content.
  5. Special Offers: Get special deals on certain Nintendo products with your subscription.
Plus, if you want an authentic experience when playing that library of NES games that comes with your subscription, Nintendo also introduced a set of two wireless NES controller for $59.99.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Super Mario Odyssey is great and all, but where are the classic Super Mario side-scrollers? Nintendo answered that question on Thursday with the reveal of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (what a mouthful) for Switch. It features all of the courses from New Super Mario Bros. U, all of the courses from New Super Luigi U, plus two new characters: Nabbit and Toadette. It'll be available on Switch starting on January 11th, 2019.

Town (Game Freak RPG)

Game Freak, the team behind the Pokemon franchise, is working on a new 3D RPG for Switch. The entire game takes place in a single town which is being invaded by monsters. Your job is to drive the monsters out.

Cities: Skylines

The popular city-building game Cities: Skylines is available on the Switch right now. The PC game first arrived on consoles last year, but this is the first time you'll be able to take your city, manages your resources, and keep your citizens happy on the go. Plus, both the After Dark and Snowfall DLC packs are included.

Yoshi's Crafted World

That Yoshi game Nintendo announced some time ago finally has a name and a release window. Save for the paper craft art style, this looks like a pretty standard Yoshi game, complete with jumping, egg tossing, and plenty of familiar friends. Yoshi's Crafted World will hit the Switch in spring 2019.

Final Fantasy

Over the next year, Switch owners are going to get their fill of Final Fantasy. Here are all the titles coming by 2019:
  • Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD: September 13th, 2018
  • World of Final Fantasy Maxima: November 6th, 2018
  • Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY!: Winter 2018
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition: 2019
  • Final Fantasy VII, IX, X / X-2 HD Remaster: 2019
  • Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age: 2019
That should be plenty of classic JRPGs to last most Nintendo fans through 2019 (and possibly beyond).

Animal Crossing for Switch Shortly after revealing that Animal Crossing's Isabelle would be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo answered many fans' prayers by confirming that a full Animal Crossing game is in development for Switch. We know virtually nothing about the game though, other than that it's scheduled for 2019.
